Cymatics is the study of visual sound. This is one of my first attempts to incorporate a cymatic pattern in glass by mechanically vibrating sheets of metal, of a variety of shapes, to produce sound and excite glass powder which settles in valleys of the waves to literally show how a sound wave moves through the material. Adding fuzz, and in this case two overdrives, to the guitar tone can heavily modify the shape of the waveform that is generated; this combined with playing multiple notes at once can lead to some very asymmetrical waves. I’m really excited about some new glass ideas for the first time in a while. I feel like I’ve been running into a lot of obstacles in my attempts to pursue, express, and refine certain ideas that I’ve been thinking about for a long time; which I’ve found is a very important part of my process. I’ve also been taking a lot of time to think, feel, and experience new things; which also turns out to be a very important part of my process. I’ve recently been able to experiment/sketch with hot glass to see what the material “tends to do” in certain situations. I find this very helpful to do prior to paper sketches to first see what is possible. Paper sketches then serve to push what is possible to what may not be. Pursuing these ideas with hot glass is then used to further define the current line of possible while allowing the material to express itself, to a certain extent. After another round of paper sketches following the second round of glass sketches, I seem to have found a more clearly defined direction to go that appears to express more than a visually pleasing form, hypothetically. This piece was a way for me to explore a more sculptural form than I'm used to making while also doing some color experiments with reactive glass shards. "exigence (self-portrait)" - 2022 How does this image make you feel? I've been doing a lot of digital work the past few months. As a self-proclaimed "glassmaker" my goal was/is to find a way to combine the digital imagery I've been exploring with glass I make before sharing any images. My combination attempts so far have been less than successful but I will continue to experiment with different methods. In the meantime I've decided to, finally, share one of my favorite self portraits. I've found using myself as the subject in heavily manipulated images has been an interesting way for me to explore and destroy the idea of myself. As someone who has always felt confronted by their own consciousness making work of this kind has helped me separate the somewhat all-consuming idea of "myself" from who "I" actually am. Exigence is a word that describes an urgent need or demand. I see this image as a visual representation of the emotions and influences that drive my need to express myself. This is definitely overdue at this point but this is the finished piece from the videos I posted last month with some macro shots of the detail. The color of the piece changes quite drastically in different light. The base color is a deep red that is accentuated when lit from the inside while the blue/green/white (caused by a reduction reaction involving silver nitrate) on the very outside of the piece is best displayed when lit from the exterior. This duality is meant to reference the ambiguous nature of human existence. A single object contains two antagonistic states, one creating the conditions for the other to arise. Little process video of me shaping the neck of a flattened vessel that will eventually be mounted to a wooden base to make an internally lit sculpture. Quick video of my glassblowing process. This piece uses a fairly strange way of applying color directly to the surface of the piece, known as a Swedish Overlay. This allows me to directly manipulate the colored glass on the surface of the piece with tools, heat, and chemical reactions which lead to very intricate textures and colors that wouldn’t be achievable any other way. Probably the best of the bunch from Sunday. One of the most overall/consistent patterns I’ve gotten so far. This piece uses iris green and enamel white. The top layer is green which literally rips open to show the white underneath and the two colors can make subtle blues and yellows when the elements in the glass react with one another. Slowly learning the little tricks to this technique but progress is being made. Now I just need to figure out what to make with all these things! I made some patterns this weekend using Swedish Overlays. This technique lets me put colored glass directly on the surface of an object. This allows the colors to chemically react with each other and the environment, when subjected to excessive amounts of heat. When certain colors are used with one another, in this case Iris Black and Soft White, the color underneath literally boils through the top layer. This creates the “oil spot” pattern and can cause the colors themselves to change.
